How to Make DIY Basket From Cardboard
What we needed:
- Cardboard
- Glue
- Scissor
- Your precious time
Tearing Apart the Cardboard:
- Start by gently tearing apart the cardboard. This process separates the two thin papers from the middle thick bumpy layer. Yes, cardboard is also like your tasty sandwich. 😊
Cutting the Irregular Circle and Gluing:
- Take one piece of paper from the cardboard. Use a compass or a round object as a guide, and draw a circle. Carefully cut out the circle using a pair of scissors or a precision knife.
Paste the Circle to the Other Half Part:
- Now, apply some glue to the cutout circle and attach it to the second cardboard paper. Doing this will create a tougher, single piece of base. Ensure it’s properly glued to avoid any future issues.

Cutting Two Circles:
- Now, use the measurements given in the picture to draw and cut out two clear circles. These will act as the bottom of your basket frame.
Cutting the Stripes from Half a Piece
- Take the remaining cardboard and cut out approximately 22 long stripes. Each strip should be 11 cm long and 0.6 cm wide. Be consistent with the measurements for uniformity.
Glue These Stripes to Make a Single One
- Take these cut stripes and start gluing them together in pairs, resulting in 11 long stripes. Align them properly to ensure they’re uniformly stacked together.
Arranging the Stripes:
- Next, arrange these glued stripes around one of the cut circles, evenly spaced, much like sun rays radiating from the circle.
Gluing the Other Circle:
- Once done arranging the stripes, glue the second circle on top, thus forming the fundamental frame of your basket.
Cutting the narrow stripes:
- Next, with the remaining cardboard, cut out several narrow stripes about 0.3 cm wide. These will form the weaving material for your basket. Attach these long stripes with each other to make a long thread.
Knitting the Basket:
- Starting from one point, weave one strip in and out through the stripes framework. Repeat it all around the circle, taking care not to skip any stripe. Continue the procedure until you reach the desired height of the basket.
Hiding the End:
- When satisfied with the basket’s height, apply some glue to the end of the last strip and stick it inside to hide. This gives your basket a neat and clean finish.
Cutting the Extras:
- With the framework out of the way, now is an excellent time to cut off any extra strips that may be sticking out. Use a pair of sharp scissors for a clean cut.
Cutting the Stripes:
- Cut two more stripes, 25 cm long and 0.5 cm wide each. They will form the rim of your basket to give it more strength and a finished look.
Making the rim:
- Glue these two stripes together to form a sturdy single piece. For aesthetics, take the knitting fabric and wrap it around this combined stripe to create the rim.
Gluing the Rim
- Now, wrap this long stripe around the top edge of your basket and secure it with sufficient glue. This forms a neat rim and lends extra sturdiness to your basket.
Cutting Stripes for Handle:
- Cut three more strips that will make up your handle. The length can depend on your preference.
Making the Handle:
- Take these three stripes and glue them together to make a single piece. It’s ideal to wrap it with the knitting fiber. Once made bend it slightly and secure in the basket with glue.
Finished Look:
Hurrah! You have successfully completed your DIY basket, which will surely please any eye. Use it as it is, paint it, or decorate it with ribbons or other embellishments; it’s pretty in every state.
