How to Work in Back Loop Only | What is BLO and FLO | What is the Difference

What is a front loop?

When you hold your crochet, bring it in front of you so the V loops face up and posts face you *; the part of the V loops close to you is called the front loop. Usually, that is the part where you perform all the stitches.

What is Back Loop?

The part of V in the back of the front loop is called the back loop. Usually, it is ignored in most crochet patterns unless you need to work a stitch back loop only, i.e., half-double crochet.

What is the difference between the Works of BLO and FLO?

The difference is how they look. When you work in the front loop only, it remains even and straight throughout. The same as we usually see.

But in the case of the Back loop, only the rows that worked in the back loop would be slightly backward from the rest. So, it creates a beautiful carved look in crochet work.

How to Work in back loop only?

Here is how to do that:

• First, make a foundation row; it is better to make a foundation with stitches with posts (learn what posts are in crochet here), like single crochet.
• Next, identify the back loop of V loops according to the method described above *.
• If you do a double crochet, yarn over and insert the hook into that loop.
• Complete the remaining steps of stitch as you will usually do.
• Complete the whole row this way. You will notice the rest of the crochet work is raised more than you just worked.
