Single crochet (abbreviated as “sc”) is one of the most basic but popular stitches every crocheter tackles after learning the chain or slip stitch. If you are one of them, this step-by-step single crochet tutorial will help you do that.
Even if you have not crocheted before, we have revised all the basic procedures before teaching this stitch! There will also be a video tutorial for visual learners to guide you in detail and tell you about other aspects of this stitch. So, let’s get started!

How to Single Crochet?
This guide is for the US single crochet, abbreviated as double crochet in the UK. Let’s learn the single crochet:
Basic Procedures:
If you are a beginner, you may first learn the terms (actually, the small procedures) so you may better understand how to single crochet:
- Yarn over (wrapping the yarn over the crochet hook)
- Slip Knot (It is a knot that will attach the crochet hook with the shaft of the hook)
To make a slip knot,
- Pull a length of yarn and hold both ends (ball and yarn end) with both hands.
- Cross the fingers to make a loop in the center.
- Insert the yarn of the left hand in the loop from the back and insert the hook in the loop.
- Then, tighten the knot, pulling the hook upward.
- Inserting the hook (entering the hook head in the loop of stitch from the side facing you to backward)
- Chain (To make it, yarn over and pull through the loop on a crochet hook)
Instructions to Single crochet:
Have you learned those basic procedures? If yes, below are the step-by-step instructions on how to crochet single crochet:
- To start, you must have a foundation row (row crocheted with the chains) or any stitches as a base to form the single crochet in them.
- Insert the hook into the loop of the next stitch.
- Yarn over and pull through the loop the working yarn by picking it with the head of the hook. Now, you will have two loops on the crochet hook.
- Yarn over again and pull through those two loops on the crochet hook. You have done your single crochet!
