Butterfly Hollow-Out Crossbody Bag

Skill Level: Beginner-friendly
Time: About 1 hour
Style: Light, airy, perfect for summer

This is a simple, lacy crossbody bag worked from the bottom up using double crochet and chain spaces. The hollow pattern makes it lightweight and stylish, ideal for casual summer outfits. It’s great practice for beginners who know basic stitches and want to gain confidence with working in rows and rounds.

Materials

  • Hollow cotton yarn (light/medium weight recommended)
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Butterfly spring buckle (for closure)
  • Optional: metal bag chain (for sides/extra strap)

Stitches Used (US Terms, in bold)

  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch

Finished Structure

  • Rectangular bottom panel in rows
  • Bag body worked in the round in an open, lacy pattern
  • Strap made with chains and woven through top row
  • Butterfly buckle as closure
  • Optional side bag chain for decoration or extra support

PATTERN

1. Bottom of the Bag

  1. Foundation Chain
    • With 3.5 mm hook, ch 46.
  2. Row 1 (Lattice setup)
    • Starting from the 6th ch from hook, work 1 dc in that chain.
    • Ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 dc in next ch.
    • Repeat: (ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 dc in next ch) across.
    • You should have 21 dc (21 groups of 1 dc + 1 ch).
    • Row 1 completed.
  3. Row 2
    • Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc + 1 ch), turn.
    • In the first dc of previous row, work 1 dc, ch 1.
    • Then in each dc across:
      • 1 dc in dc, ch 1
    • Work 21 groups total.
    • The 21st dc goes into the 2nd chain of the turning ch-4 from Row 1.
    • Row 2 completed.
  4. Rows 3–7
    • Repeat Row 2.
    • Always: ch 4, turn, then 1 dc + ch 1 into each dc across, with the last dc in the 2nd ch of the turning chain.
    • After Row 7, the bottom panel is done.

2. First Round of Bag Body (Turn to Working in the Round)

You will now work all around the rectangle (both long sides and both short sides), continuing the (1 dc, 1 ch) lattice pattern.

  1. Start Round 1 of Bag Body
    • From the end of Row 7, ch 4 (counts as 1 dc + 1 ch).
    • Turn to work along the first short side of the bottom.
  2. Short Side 1
    • In the first stitch on the side, work 1 dc, ch 1.
    • Continue: in each suitable side “stitch space” along the short edge, work (1 dc, ch 1).
    • Make 6 groups total on this short side:
      • Each group = 1 dc + 1 ch.
    • After the 6th group, you are at the corner.
  3. Long Side (Bottom Row Edge)
    • At the stitch of the first dc of Row 1, work 1 dc, ch 1.
    • Then along the long side (Row 1 edge), work (1 dc into each dc of the row, ch 1).
    • You will have 21 groups on this long side.
    • The 21st group ends with a dc near the opposite short side.
  4. Short Side 2
    • On the next short side:
      • Work 1 dc in the 2nd chain stitch, ch 1.
      • Continue down the short side: (1 dc, ch 1)
      • Total 6 groups on this side.
    • After the 6th group, find the 2nd chain stitch again and work 1 dc, ch 1 to reach the last long side.
  5. Second Long Side
    • Now work along the other long side (Row 7 edge):
      • 1 dc in each dc across, ch 1,
      • Do NOT work into the very last stitch; stop at the second-to-last dc.
      • You will have 20 groups on this long side.
  6. Close Round 1
    • After the 20th group, locate the 3rd chain of the initial ch-4 at the start of the round.
    • Work 1 sl st into that 3rd chain to close the round.
    • Round 1 complete.
    • You now have 51 groups of (1 dc + 1 ch) around, plus the standing chain group making 52 spaces in total.

3. Rounds 2–10 of Bag Body

  1. Rounds 2–10 (continue lattice)
    • For Round 2 and each round up to Round 10:
      • Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc + 1 ch).
      • In every dc around, work 1 dc, ch 1.
      • You will maintain 51 groups per round (working into each dc).
      • End each round with 1 sl st into the 3rd ch of the starting ch-4.
    • Keep the pattern consistent:
      • (1 dc in each dc, ch 1 in between) all the way around.

After Round 10, the body height is completed.

4. Round 11 – Solid Top Edge

  1. Round 11 (solid round)
    • Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc).
    • In the next ch-1 space, work 1 dc.
    • In the next dc stitch, work 1 dc.
    • Continue around:
      • 1 dc into each ch-1 space and 1 dc into each dc.
    • Work all the way around in a ring, forming a solid top edge.
    • Join with 1 sl st into the top of the starting ch-3.
    • Fasten off and weave in ends.

5. Strap

  1. Chain Strap
    • With the same yarn, ch 120 (or longer/shorter depending on desired length).
    • Fasten off, weave in the ends with a tidy finish on both ends.
  2. Attach Strap (Weaving Through Top)
    • Using a yarn needle, thread one end of the strap.
    • Weave it through the hollow spaces of Round 10 (the last openwork round), around the top part of the bag.
    • Find the 5 central dc at the front.
    • In the gaps next to them, weave and intertwine the strap so that every 3 dc are crossed/intertwined to position the strap nicely and support the closure.

6. Hardware & Finishing

  1. Butterfly Spring Buckle
    • Attach the butterfly spring buckle to the strap at the front center, where you intertwined the strap. This works as the bag closure.
  2. Side Bag Chain
    • At suitable positions on both sides of the bag’s top edge, attach a bag chain.
    • This can serve as an additional decorative element or as a secondary strap.

Special Features

  • Butterfly hollow design: Open lattice pattern gives a light, airy look that’s perfect for summer.
  • Quick make: Can be worked in about an hour once familiar with the pattern.
  • Beginner-friendly: Uses only dc, ch, sl st with simple repetition.
  • Customizable: Easily adjust height (more or fewer rounds) and strap length (more or fewer chains).

Tutor’s Suggestions & Uses

  • Ideal for beginners to practice counting stitches, working in rows, then transitioning to rounds.
  • Perfect for summer outings, beach days, or casual errands.
  • You can line the bag with fabric if you want to hold smaller items securely.
  • Use neutral cotton for a minimal look or bright colors for a playful style.

Tip

To keep the bag from stretching too much over time, avoid very heavy items and consider using a slightly tighter tension, especially on the strap.
