Magnetic Spice Rack with Chalkboard Tins – DIY or Buy

DIY Magnetic Chalkboard Spice Tins

It finally happened…

I knocked a bottle of garlic salt out of my over-crowded spice cabinet and it shattered to pieces.
My dog ate some so that was the last straw people. I’m tired of not being able to quickly and effortlessly find a certain spice when I need it.

Now presenting the DIY or Buy magnetic spice rack storage solution.

First, get cha some tins.

I bought online at for 55 cents each. These have screw tops. I’ve heard horror stories in researching this project of other spice tin lids coming off & spilling everywhere. I’ve had enough spillage issues.

Second, buy some magnetic strips. I bought mine at the Container Store for $12.99 each.

Third, you’ll need some chalkboard paint. I prefer Hobby Lobby for these kinds of things. The spray paint was $7.49. Just get the spray paint and keep it simple. No need to get a paint brush involved here.

Fourth, you’ll need some adhesive magnets. I bought 1″ magnets. They were $1.49 at Hobby Lobby.

Oh, and don’t forget chalk. Do I really need to post a picture of chalk here? Ok good…moving on.

Wait, I feel bad. Here you go.

That’s all you need! Easy peasy.

Now, spray those babies down. You will want to do an additional coat a few hours after the first one.

Spraying Tins

Wait several hours and prime the lids by turning the chalk on it’s side and rubbing the lid with it. Then wipe it off with a paper towel. This keeps scratches from occurring as you write on these lids with your chalk. Label your lids, apply your adhesive magnets, mount your magnetic strips to the wall, & enjoy!

This has made my cooking life so much easier and it’s kind of fun to reach up and grab whatever spice I need and unscrew the lid. I give myself a mental pat on the back with each use of this simple spice rack storage system.

DIY or Buy

  8. I’m sorry to sound slightly off topic, however i must say to you that pretty much nothing in this world comes for free. You will have to fight extremely hard if you want to make it. The same fact is true for making money online. Work very hard and without any doubt the results will come sooner or later.
